US Open: Gasquet va affronter Nadal en demi-finale

Le Français de 27 ans a accédé pour la deuxième fois seulement au dernier carré d'un tournoi du Grand Chelem (après Wimbledon en 2007) grâce à un succès arraché en cinq sets 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 au terme d'un match "fabuleux".
"C'est incroyable de se retrouver en demi-finale d'un tournoi aussi prestigieux", a déclaré le Biterrois. Battre Ferrer en cinq sets à l'US Open sur le central, c'est énorme".
Six ans après sa demi-finale face à Roger Federer à Wimbledon, il aura droit samedi à un match de gala contre son ami Nadal, dont l'ombre l'accompagne depuis près de quinze ans.
A l'époque, l'Espagnol et le Français, nés à deux semaines d'intervalle, étaient annoncés comme les grands de demain.
Depuis, Nadal a fait plus que confirmer cette étiquette (12 titres du Grand Chelem) alors que Gasquet n'a que très épisodiquement tutoyé les plus hauts sommets du tennis.
Vu sa prestation mercredi contre son pauvre compatriote Tommy Robredo (N.19), balayé 6-0, 6-2 , 6-2 en 1h40, et vu son comportement dans le tournoi (aucun jeu de service perdu en cinq matches), le N.2 mondial partira en immense favori.
"C'était mon meilleur match du tournoi jusque-là, ça fait du bien de progresser à chaque rencontre, a dit le Majorquin. C'est génial de voir Richard en demi-finale, il fait un super tournoi. C'est un bon ami, on a démarré ensemble."
Si le Français parvenait à infliger à l'Espagnol sa première défaite de la saison sur dur (après 20 victoires) et le battait pour la première fois après dix défaites chez les pros, l'exploit serait bien plus retentissant que cette déjà très belle victoire face à Ferrer.

Sur le court central, Gasquet est sorti vainqueur d'un combat dans lequel il n'a failli ni dans le jeu, avec un revers qui fonctionnait à merveille, ni sur le plan physique, malgré ce marathon de 4h40, et cinq sets deux jours avant contre Milos Raonic en 8e de finale, et ni dans la tête, malgré la possibilité d'une sixième défaite en Grand Chelem après avoir mené deux sets à zéro -quatre mois après celle de Roland-Garros face à Stanislas Wawrinka- et d'une neuvième défaite en dix matches devant l'une de ses bêtes noires.
Mais il a fait fi de tout ces fantômes pour forger sa première victoire sur dur contre un joueur du Top 4 depuis six ans, quand il avait battu Novak Djokovic au Masters en novembre 2007, à l'époque de sa splendeur et de son meilleur classement en carrière (7e mondial).
"J'étais fatigué mais je n'avais plus rien à calculer dans le cinquième set, a confié Gasquet. Il fallait que je tienne mon service. Lui a fait un mauvais jeu de service et j'ai mené 4-2. Il fallait alors que je tienne mentalement. Je suis allé chercher la victoire avec la bonne attitude. C'était un merveilleux cinquième set."
Admirable dans la défaite, Ferrer n'a pas cherché d'excuses dans le départ précipité de son entraîneur Javier Piles pour l'Espagne après le 1er tour, pour cause de décès familial.
"Richard a fait un super match, surtout sur son revers, a dit le Valencien. Au dernier set, j'ai perdu mon service sur un très mauvais jeu, je me suis déconcentré. Et après c'était difficile de revenir contre un tel joueur."
Dans l'ère Open, un seul Français avait pu se frayer un chemin jusque dans le dernier carré du dernier tournoi du Grand Chelem de la saison: Cédric Pioline (1993, 1999).
Ce dernier était allé jusqu'en finale en 1993, en battant le N.1 mondial Jim Courier en 8e de finale.
Vingt ans plus tard, c'est à Gasquet de jouer.
