La gagnante de l'US Open 2011, l'Australienne Samantha Stosur, a pris la porte dès le 1er tour mardi à New York, victime d'une Américaine de 17 ans décomplexée, Victoria Duval.
Duval, née à Miami de parents haïtiens, n'avait pas joué un match cette saison dans le tableau principal d'un tournoi WTA mais cela ne l'a pas empêché de saisir sa chance face à une joueuse du Top 10, qui l'a toutefois bien aidé en commettant 56 fautes directes (dont 10 doubles fautes).
La tête de série N.11 s'est inclinée 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 à la quatrième match de balle face à la 296e mondiale, issue des qualifications et dont la seule autre apparition en Grand Chelem remontait à l'US Open 2012, où la Belge Kim Clijsters avait aisément disposé d'elle.
"J'ai fait beaucoup trop d'erreurs, notamment quand j'ai mené 3-0 et 4-2 dans le deuxième set, j'ai laissé passer toutes mes occasions, a indiqué Stosur. Je ne vais pas être mauvaise perdante et dire qu'elle n'a rien fait mais je l'ai certainement aidé à gagner ce match."
A 29 ans, celle qui avait battu l'Américaine Serena Williams, alors tenante du titre, pour remporter à New York en 2011 son seul titre du Grand Chelem, vient de se séparer de son entraîneur de longue date David Taylor et cherche encore visiblement un second souffle.
Duval, formée chez Nick Bollettieri ("Je l'appelle +Oncle Nick+") est le dernier produit en date d'une jeune génération américaine au réservoir impressionant chez les dames (elle n'est que la 27e américaine à la WTA).
Dix Américaines figurent dans le Top 100, dont six de 23 ans ou moins.
La N.2 mondiale Victoria Azarenka a de son côté passé une soirée très tranquille sur le court central et n'a eu besoin que de 65 minutes pour écarter sans aucune pitié sa première adversaire, la modeste allemande Dinah Pfizenmaier, 99e mondiale, à laquelle elle n'a pas laissé un seul jeu (6-0, 6-0).
Dans le tableau masculin, le N.1 mondial Novak Djokovic et le Suisse Roger Federer, désormais 7e à l'ATP, n'ont pas non plus tremblé lors de leur premier match.
Le Serbe a cliniquement exécuté le Lituanien Ricardas Berankis (112e ATP ) 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 en 82 minutes pour entamer sa route vers une quatrième finale d'affilée à Flushing Meadows (un titre en 2011).
Djokovic a pris les choses très au sérieux et a limité ses erreurs au minimum (9 fautes directes seulement) face à un adversaire dépassé en retour de service.
Federer a sereinement dominé le Slovène Grega Zemlja (6-3, 6-2, 7-5 en 93 minutes) pour lancer sa quête d'un 18e titre du Grand Chelem dans des conditions idéales.
