Richard Gasquet a atteint mercredi à l'US Open la deuxième demi-finale de Grand Chelem de sa carrière en livrant un combat acharné à l'Espagnol David Ferrer, N.4 mondial.

 

Le Français de 27 ans, dont la seule autre demi-finale en tournoi majeur remontait à six ans (Wimbledon 2007), s'est imposé 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 face à un joueur qui était l'une de ses bêtes noires.

 

Le Biterrois va affronter samedi un autre Espagnol, Rafael Nadal (N.2) ou Tommy Robredo (N.19), pour une place en finale.

 

Il n'est que le deuxième Français à atteindre le dernier carré à Flushing Meadows dans l'ère Open, après Cédric Pioline (1993, 1999).

 

Le 9e joueur mondial, qui était N.1 Français à New York après le forfait sur blessure de Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, n'avait plus battu Ferrer depuis 2008 et comptait face à lui huit défaites en neuf matches avant de se présenter sur un court central Arthur-Ashe baigné de soleil.

 

Ses difficultés étaient telles face au Valencien de 31 ans qu'il ne lui avait jamais pris un set en dehors de sa victoire en 2008 à Toronto.

 

"C'est merveilleux, a déclaré le Français sur le court après un combat de 3h23. Cette victoire signifie tellement pour moi. La première fois que j'ai joué une demi-finale de Grand Chelem, j'avais seulement 21 ans."

 

"J'ai bien démarré le match, j'ai vu qu'il était nerveux et j'en ai profité mais David est un battant redoutable et il a fallu que je lutte, car j'étais fatigué après mon match difficile contre Raonic (4h40 de jeu en 8e de finale lundi, ndlr). J'ai l'expérience des matches en cinq sets, j'en ai joué beaucoup dans ma carrière."

 

Récital lors des deux premiers sets

 

Pour forger sa première victoire sur dur depuis six ans contre un joueur du Top 4, le Français a déstabilisé Ferrer dès les premiers échanges, dictant le jeu du fond du court avec ses longs revers et avec des incursions au filet conclues par de belles volées.

 

Le Biterrois a récité un excellent tennis durant les deux premiers sets, bouclés en 1h10, profitant également de la générosité adverse.

 

Mais l'Espagnol, reconcentré, a retrouvé ses vertus d'inlassable défenseur au troisième set et Gasquet a commencé à descendre de son nuage.

 

Moins précis en revers et maintenant forcé de jouer de longs échanges, le Français n'a pas su tenir sa mise en jeu.

 

Mené d'un break dans le quatrième set, Gasquet a dû négocier un cruel sixième jeu, long de 13 minutes, dans lequel il a eu trois balles de débreak.

 

Sans succès.

 

Signe que Ferrer, qui avait déjà l'ascendant physique, a pris là un avantage psychologique important en les sauvant, Gasquet a cédé son service dans la foulée.
