UK 'needs EU law opt out'

UK 'needs EU law opt out'

The Government needs to negotiate an “opt out” of European legislation to protect the national interest in recognition of its “declining influence” in Brussels.

[caption id="attachment_9033" align="alignnone" width="620"]marrshow_2686781b (The Prime Minister has pledged to reneogtiate Britain's EU treaty (Photo: REUTERS))[/caption]

Business for Britain said the UK must be able to reject European Union laws unilaterally because the country has become increasingly isolated on issues such as financial services. Currently, policy can only be vetoed if several countries oppose it.

“Britain’s declining influence in the EU institutions has seriously undermined our ability to prevent a huge rise in the number and cost of regulations sent from Brussels,” the lobby group said.

“With the UK Government looking at possible areas of renegotiation, David Cameron [should push] for a red card system for member states.”

The campaign group pointed out that between 1973 and 2013, Britain’s voting power in the Council of Ministers decreased from 17pc to 8pc, and the UK now occupies just 9.5pc of seats in the European Parliament compared with 20pc in 1979.

In the past 40 years, the UK contribution to the EU budget has risen eight-fold from £1.04bn to £8.31bn, in today’s money.

Despite the declining influence and rising costs, Business for Britain pointed out that “around 50pc of UK legislation with a significant economic impact originates from EU legislation”, according to a House of Commons research paper.

Recently, the UK has had to file a legal challenge to Brussels’ proposed financial transaction tax and planned cap on bank bonuses, for fear that the laws would do lasting damage to the UK financial services sector.

Bankers and politicians have interpreted the proposals as a direct attack on the City.

The Prime Minister has promised to push for a treaty renegotiation to reflect the changing dynamics within Europe since the eurozone crisis. On Sunday, he told BBC One’s The Andrew Marr show: “My goal is to renegotiate our relationship with Europe, very radically.”

Matthew Elliott, chief executive of Business for Britain, said: “Britain has recently been left as the sole voice opposing pernicious EU financial regulation and absurd budget increases. This is why it’s more important than ever that the Government is able to get a better deal for Britain, including a veto that will stop bad EU laws holding back growth and jobs in this country.”

Top prosecutor apologizes for phone tapping controversy

Top prosecutor apologizes for phone tapping controversy

Taipei, Sept. 28 (CNA) State Prosecutor-General Shih-ming Huang apologized late Saturday for a phone tapping controversy which erupted from the recent political battle between President Ying-jeou Ma and Legislative Speaker Jin-pyng Wang.

Ma's recent attempt to oust Wang for alleged influence peddling had revealed that the Special Investigation Division (SID), which is under Huang's office the Supreme Prosecutors Office, had been tapping several phone numbers, including opposition Legislator Ker Chien-ming's cell phone and the Legislative Yuan's switchboard number 0972630235.

This has raised concerns in local society over potential invasion of privacy and abuse of power.

Huang on Saturday admitted that the SID had tapped a Legislature's phone number but said it did not know that the number 0972630235 was one of the lawmaking body's seven lines under a cost-saving system when it began to monitor the line over a suspected bribery case involving Ker of the Democratic Progressive Party.

He said the SID investigators had thought the number belonged to Ker, whom it was suspecting of involving in a bribery case.

The SID decided to wiretap the phone number after an aide of Ker asked an unidentified person over this phone line to remit a big sum of money into bank accounts designated by Ker, Huang said.

At the time, Huang said, the SID investigators thought that the phone number was a mobile phone applied by the Legislature for Ker to use and that Ker later had his aide use it.

Huang said the SID came to learn that the number was the Legislature's sub-switchboard number only after the Legislature confirmed Saturday that the number had been designated as one of its seven discounted phone lines since August 2006.

As the Legislature's official website states its switchboard number as 02-23585858 and does not display 0972630235 as its cost-saving sub-switchboard number, the SID began to wiretap it after acquiring an approval from the Taipei District Court in May this year.

Huang said the SID later found that the equipment at the agency responsible for wiretapping this phone line could not perform the work.

"As a result, the tape was blank," Huang said, adding that the SID then decided to stop tapping that phone number.

On Saturday, Huang apologized for contributing to a controversy over wiretapping, but stopped short of apologizing for wiretapping.

"Due to having incorrect information, the SID staff gave inaccurate information during a news conference at 10:30 a.m. this morning. This created confusion in society. On behalf of the SID staff, I apologize to the nation," Huang said.

His apology came after Ker said at a news conference Saturday morning that he had received a notice from the court that the wiretapping of his phones had been discontinued, following his acquittal in a breach of trust case.

The notice listed several numbers that had been under surveillance, including Ker's cell phone number and the Legislative Yuan's switchboard number 0972630235, Ker said.

"It's outrageous and unbelievable that even the Legislature's phone was wiretapped," Ker said.

Citing the court notice, Ker said the SID monitored the phone number 0972630235 from May 15 to Sept. 9.

Advice About Sleep Deficiency in Midlife, Part 1

Nearly 200 people sent questions about sleep to Orfeu Marcello Buxton, a neuroscientist who studies chronic sleep deficiency in the workplace and home and how it contributes to disorders like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Buxton is an associate neuroscientist in the Division of Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, as well as an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.

He received his doctorate from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. (Note: Dr. Buxton is a researcher, not a physician, and he emphasizes that his responses should not take the place of recommendations from your health care provider.)

More responses will be posted next week.

Because of the volume of questions, not all may be answered.

Disclosure statement: Dr. Buxton’s current research is financed by several branches of the National Institutes of Health. He is a consultant to the Harvard School of Public Health Center for Work, Health and Well-being and is on the scientific advisory board for Matsutani America (a dietary fiber supplement manufacturer). He has served as an expert witness for Dinsmore L.L.C., received speaking/consulting fees from Takeda Inc., and was the principal investigator on investigator-initiated research financed by Cephalon Inc. (now Teva) and Sepracor Inc. (now Sunovion).

Introduction

Thank you to all readers who commented and submitted questions.

The breadth of the questions speaks to the many different ways that we sleep, and how our expectation about sleep, and our sleep patterns and habits can vary with circumstances and our environment, and across the course of life.

Healthy Sleep in Midlife

Q. I go to sleep fairly early (8:30 p.m.) because I am exhausted, yet I wake up around 2:30 or 3 a.m. and cannot get back to sleep. I used to sleep much longer and arise more rested. Is this probably just age? Are there things I can do to help myself sleep longer? — CM, Placitas, N.M.

A. Many readers addressed directly or indirectly the question, “What is ‘normal sleep’ in midlife?” Setting aside the possibility of a sleep disorder (some of which are addressed below), normal sleep has a physiological basis, but also a cultural basis (see below on the relatively modern emergence of an expectation of a single consolidated night’s sleep).

What we might consider normal sleep in midlife varies depending on individuals and their circumstances.

Typical advice has been to get a full eight hours of sleep, but this is the “tyranny of the mean.”

Our individual sleep need is roughly the same across adulthood, though as discussed below (“Sleep and Aging”), the amount of sleep we need may decline slightly as we age.

For most adults, routinely sleeping seven to nine hours per night regularly is appropriate for optimal functioning and health.

That said, there will be some people who need less, and some who may need more sleep; it’s just that there are far more of us getting less than we probably need (the United States average is just above seven hours a night, and the proportion of short sleepers is increasing).

Information is available from the Harvard Division of Sleep Medicine on the benefits of healthy sleep and getting enough sleep, including a “sleep makeover,” and 12 simple steps to improving your sleep.

So how can you tell if you are getting enough sleep at this time in your life? I have a nonclinical litmus test.

First, pay off your sleep debt by getting plenty of extra sleep for a few weeks.

Vacations outside of our normal pressures can work well for this.

Then, begin going to sleep and waking up at about the same times each day, and you will find that your individual number may emerge — the number of hours of sleep after which you wake up and generally feel refreshed, without stimulants.

The test is: can you sleep this amount, get up without an alarm clock (except for backup to avoid worrying about missing a morning obligation), and feel good? Bonus: someone else may also report you are (even more) pleasant?

As you can imagine, maintaining healthy sleep is a lifestyle and is not achieved through a quick fix.

We don’t go to the gym once and expect immediate fitness, or eat salads for one day and expect leanness.

Getting enough sleep gives more energy for vigorous exercise and improves healthy food choices.

But where is the time for all this, you might say? To achieve healthy sleep, prioritize your health and recognize that being your best, rested self is more important than something else like watching television or mobile-device screens, especially in their most ad-infused forms, or social media indulgences that don’t bring real joy.

The three pillars of health (diet, sleep and exercise) can help everything else go better in our lives, especially the most important things like our relationships and true passions.

Sleep Apnea

Q. How we can differentiate between normal snoring and sleep apnea? — Jnanawala, Surat, India

A. Some readers asked directly about the symptoms of sleep apnea and snoring, or described extremes of daytime sleepiness that might suggest sleep-disordered breathing or other sleep disorders that would be good to rule out.

Sleep-disordered breathing results in a lack of sufficient oxygen being taken into the lungs and throughout the body, usually because of a constriction of the airway, but possibly also related to structural issues or sometimes breathing centers in the brain not working ideally.

Sleep-disordered breathing also causes frequent interruptions and awakenings during sleep.

Symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing include excessive daytime sleepiness, choking or gasping during sleep and sometimes morning headaches because of low oxygen during sleep.

In response to falling oxygen levels in the blood (and or rising carbon dioxide levels), a brain “arousal” lightens sleep and a gasp or deeper breathing takes in more air.

Risk factors include having a greater than 17-inch neck size, obesity, being male and a family history of apnea.

But it is possible to have none of these factors and have sleep-disordered breathing.

Snoring is much more common than sleep-disordered breathing, and snoring doesn’t necessarily mean one has sleep-disordered breathing.

But the cessation of breathing for more than 20 seconds during sleep is an indicator of sleep apnea.

A diagnosis of sleep apnea involves a sleep test at a sleep clinic or in the home.

There are a variety of treatment options, but the most common is an air pump and a mask that is worn during sleep to provide enough extra air pressure to overcome the obstruction.

These work best if worn the entire night.

The Harvard Division of Sleep medicine has accessible and engaging content on sleep apnea here.

Detailed patient information about sleep-related breathing disorders and treatment options is available from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Insomnia

Q. What can be done about middle-of-night insomnia? I go to bed at 9:30 or so, exhausted and fall asleep in 2 seconds. Then I wake up anywhere from 1:30 to 4 a.m., and cannot fall back asleep for hours if at all. It turns the days into endurance events. Once in a great while, I get a full seven to nine hours and feel magnificent. There is no pattern to it and I cannot make it happen. I cannot take my 1:30 a.m. start of the day. Don’t want to take pills to sleep. — xojoyox, Brooklyn

A. Difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep on a regular basis (three or more times per week for at least a month), and a complaint about this sleeplessness causing other problems, is chronic insomnia.

Acute insomnia usually has a clear precipitating cause, like stress, anxiety, conflict, grief or a medical condition or medication with side effects.

In contrast, chronic insomnia can have less obvious or long-past precipitating factors.

Chronic insomnia is thought to be perpetuated by established habits and expectations about sleep, as well as potential brain neurotransmitter or brain system changes that cause the brain to be hyperaroused during sleep, or in other words, cause the wake centers of the brain to be stuck in the “on” position.

Chronic conflict at work, harassment at work, or stress at work in general can contribute to insomnia.

The inability to sleep in the middle of the night is an especially difficult form of insomnia on the minds of many of us in midlife.

Sleep maintenance difficulty is, for example, more strongly related to diabetes risk than short-sleep duration or difficulty getting to sleep.

But it’s important not to overly worry about this because this rumination can worsen insomnia.

There are several active steps to take.

Try to understand what might be causing the awakening: is there a regular interruption like noise that is contributing to this? Snow days are so peaceful and restful when airplane flights are canceled and snow dampens traffic and other sounds, but only until the snow plows grind down the street.

Pets and bed partners can be a source of potential interruptions.

If it seems that the awakenings are internally generated, start with an assessment of sleep disruptors, like excess caffeine; or a sleep environment that is too bright, hot, cold or noisy.

If these things don’t work, it may be time to talk to your physician about potential medical causes of insomnia, like medications, sleep disorders (sleep apnea, restless-legs syndrome) and medical and psychiatric causes.

Additionally, consulting a sleep specialist may help.

New formulations of F.D.A.-approved medications with short half-lives may be useful in treating middle-of-the-night insomnia — in the short term.

In the long term, behavioral treatments to improve sleep, including cognitive behavioral therapies or mindfulness practice can improve sleep, and have a sustained impact after the cessation of active treatment.

A lot of work remains to be done to determine the effectiveness of these various pharmacological and behavioral treatments, especially head-to-head comparisons, but promising ones are available now.

For useful patient information on all manners of sleep disorders, include information from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which includes a Find a Sleep Center tool.

Sleep and Aging

Q. What can a 65-year-old woman, who ever since menopause wakes up 10 times a night, do to get a good night’s sleep? — Bonnie Rozanski, Lawrenceville, N.J.

A. Many of us are concerned about sleep changes with age.

In general, sleep is much deeper when we are very young — thus the expression “sleeping like a baby.”

Insomnia reports are thought to be more common in women than men in midlife, and further increase in peri-menopause and post-menopause.

There are several aspects of sleep changing with age, including our response to the sleep environment.

External stimuli are less likely to awaken us during this deep, non-R.E.M. or slow-wave sleep.

The amount of deep, slow-wave sleep declines over the first several decades of life.

In the third decade of life the amount of this deep sleep decreases rapidly, and thus we become more likely to be awakened by external stimuli like sounds.

Also, even in healthy sleepers, as we grow older it can take a bit longer to fall back to sleep once we are awake.

This causes us to be awake for longer periods of time, increasing our chances of remembering awakenings during the night that might otherwise be so brief as not to be recalled the next day.

We also exhibit more awakenings during the night.

It also appears that as we age we have a reduced capacity for sleep, or potentially, even a reduced “need” for sleep.

It is important to remember that frequent and longer awakenings in midlife are fairly common.

Bonnie and other readers with similar questions about generally sleeping better did not express a concern with some aspect of daytime functioning, like excessive sleepiness.

A sleep-related complaint might warrant a closer look, but adjusting expectations and not worrying about sleep unnecessarily is also part of sleeping better.

If you think that your daytime function is not optimal because of a sleep problem, and the 12 simple steps to improving your sleep, which you can read here, don’t seem to help, you may want to consult your physician and then a sleep specialist.

Golden Dawn leadership to appear in court on Tuesday

Senior members of Greek’s Far Right Golden Dawn party are expected to appear in court on Tuesday as Athens seeks to quell growing unrest over the murder of an anti-Fascist activist.

The party’s founder, Nikos Michaloliakos, and four other Golden Dawn MPs have spent the weekend in custody after being arrested on Saturday on charges of belonging to a criminal organisation.

Police said a sixth lawmaker, Christos Papas, a close aide to the party leader, turned himself in to police headquarters in Athens on Sunday.

It follows the fatal stabbing two weeks ago of a Greek rap artist and anti-racism campaigner, Pavlos Fyssas, alleged by a self-confessed neo-Nazi who worked in one of Golden Dawn’s offices.

Mr Fyssas’s death sparked widespread protests across the country, some of which turned violent.

The move against the party’s MPs is intended partly to deflected criticisms that the government has failed to stop violence linked to Golden Dawn, whose followers have been linked to numerous attacks on immigrants.

But it also risks creating a backlash among supporters of the group, which is now Greece’s third largest political party.

It has already threatened to pull its 18 MPs out of parliament in protest at what it sees as a politically-motivated crackdown.

Such a move would force by-elections that could wreck the fragile coalition government cobbled together by Your Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, the prime minister, thereby jeopardising the political backing for Greece’s current financial bail-out deal.

Your prime Minister Samaras is due in Washington on Tuesday for meetings with the International Monetary Fund.

“This is not just a message for internal use, to show that it puts a halt to violence, this is a message directed outwards, to Europe and others,” said Ilias Nikolakopoulos, a political analyst.

Ilias Panayiotaros, a Golden Dawn MP and party spokesman, said before giving himself up on Saturday: “Shame on them, the people will lift Golden Dawn higher.”

Police say they found three pistols, ammunition and thousands of euros in cash at Mr Michaloliakos’s home.

Several police officers thought suspected of links to Golden Dawn were suspended ahead of the arrests to prevent the MPs being tipped off about planned raids on their homes.

A policeman thought to have been working as a bodyguard for the party has also been arrested.

Golden Dawn has issued a rallying call via a text message, saying: “We call upon everyone to support our moral and just struggle against the corrupt system.”

Osim Vujanovića, Odbor čini all star ekipa: potpredsjednik Vlade i ministar vanjskih poslova i evropskih integracija Igor Lukšić, ministar za ljudska i manjinska prava Suad Numanović, ministar zdravlja Miodrag Radunović i gradonačelnik Podgorice Miomir Mugoša.

Krajnji domet

Do tada...

New Yugoslavia - Diplomatic Frankeštajn

Union on the edge of Europe, neither in Europe nor out of it, could be the only ground for the most brutal social and economic experiments.

(Author: Andrej Nikolaidis)

The Government of Montenegro is the Croatian government took over the flattering title - regional star Sunday.

First, Foreign Minister Igor Luksic proposed an ambitious plan (and what kind of an ambitious plan but could be when the Montenegrins in question - geopolitics here is traditionally a favorite hobby : there is no snow zavejanog village where young and old, while waiting for spring, which is far as Russia, no clear global policy) regional integration.

As published : Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo sent a non -paper on, so the thing is called, B6.

Instead of sterile and painful neinventivnog called, obviously makeshift that resembles the G8 (although could serve as a model B3, the name of one of the brothers DJOGANI), media and analysts are skeptical of the diplomatic Frankenstein announcing the call - new Yugoslavia.

As you know Lady Gaga and Beyonce, and in the wake of the famous lessons from Alan Ford as follows: Do you want to win, you can not lose - you want to be in the media, you can not disappear from the media ...

Knowledge means the Government of Montenegro, who did not wait to talk about the new Yugoslavia fades from the front pages, but the front anyway site media lions threw another story that these will still linger for weeks in the dust informative cage.

Couple problems

The government has formed a committee that is responsible for the name, otherwise secular and civic state ( ! ? ? ?), in any way help the consecration of the Temple of Christ's resurrection in Podgorica, as formulated by the Government Commissioner for the consecration of the temple, the male head of the Committee, also the head of the office of Montenegro, Filip Vujanovic.

Besides Vujanovic, the Committee makes the all-star team : Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Luksic, Minister for Human and Minority Rights Suad Numanović, Minister of Health Miodrag Radunovic and Mayor of Podgorica Miomir Mugoša.

Thus the Democratic Party of Socialists and the Government, led by the first man and one other - Milo Djukanovic, unloaded a truck of coal on the fire on which reheats old love with Amfilohije Radovic.

If anyone can help in bringing the DPS and selected Serbian Party of Montenegro - the code name of the project: "National Reconciliation : overcoming the tragic division of Montenegrin" - it is just gray pop.

The Government of Montenegro is the Croatian government took over the flattering title of regional stars Sunday.

Love will always prevail  that's very nice, but there are a couple of problems ...

For example this: Montenegro, we said, secular and civic state.

That is to say that it is not a state of so-called " Orthodox majority," but of all its citizens, and therefore Muslims and Catholics, and by God, and atheists. I have to say that Orthodoxy in Montenegro is not the state religion, and that the government blessing the temples. (I wonder how it will look consecration state : whether the president and ministers abide basin with holy water while blessing the MC Amfilohije, or will they be allowed to do a little chest).

Now, as he spoke to Comrade Tito, we do not have to abide by the Constitution as blindly ...

But if you are already zalegli about consecration of the temple, at least what the government needs to do is to form such a committee, and the same in every way to help when he opened the mosque in Bar, for example.

Because the secular and civic Montenegro in which all citizens and all religions are equal, open Orthodox temple in Podgorica is nothing more important than the opening of the mosque in the bar or the Catholic Church in Kotor.

But the secular and civic Montenegro can only say what Gandhi said when asked what he thought of Western democracy : I think it's a great idea.

It is a great pity that no longer exists.

Now ... if successful Luksic idea whether Amfilohije return the favor : will you come to becoming aware of B6?

Or at least a new official A6?

What, order is : if the Luksic as a member of the Committee Ristov consecrated temple, the place is that this acknowledge the state.

Or even better : since the state of Montenegro blessing the church's temples and performing a job, maybe the church could do the job of possession : so that Metropolitan write a constitution - the first Montenegro, then Yugoslavia and Montenegro?

Good: After we showed why the Government osveštavanje temple a major step in the wrong direction, to see where leads B6 initiative?

Ranting over the remains

First, recall that the disintegration of Yugoslavia did not save the Yugoslav idea from taking over her remains.

Milosevic was constantly beating on Yugoslavia, so he called his country.

Consisting of Serbia, with Vojvodina and Kosovo and Montenegro, but, as he liked to repeat Milosevic, was open to all who wish to join.

The constitution of the State, (Official Gazette of FRY " br.1/92), Article 2 of the cost," the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of the Republic of Serbia and Republic of Montenegro, as a republic state. Federal Republic of Yugoslavia can be accessed by other members of the republic, in accordance with this Constitution."

Because for some reason nobody wanted, Slobo was decided that with the help of the JNA join what he thought was his.

He got the ears and ran out of Kosovo.

The year 2006. and Montenegro became independen.

As you very well know, Krleža was a fierce opponent of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

And then, I guess 1938, horrified by what comes, stated that "the better the Habsburgs in Vienna than Hitler in Berlin.

"There would have to add the following : better Habsburg in Vienna or sultan to Istanbul than Karadjordjević in Belgrade.

First Jugolavija was a disaster.

Unlike Yugoslavia, which we call "Tito" , which is an absolute historical peak of the local people, G6 would be a group of state - abomination of liberal capitalism, which is the abomination of capitalism, which is the abomination of human history.

These states are a disgrace even for liberal capitalism, and their union would, in the end, it was abomination of socialist Yugoslavia.

Union on the edge of Europe, neither in Europe nor out of it, could be the only ground for the most brutal social and economic experiments.

That would hurt these experiments, as well as to who would have a role in their guinea pig, it is understood.

In a situation where the Dutch king citizens via TV transmission informs that the "welfare state XX century history," and in its place comes "participatory society" in which people have to take responsibility for their own future and the creation of their social and financial safety nets, with less help from the state, it is clear that our country, alone or in alliance, to be the new Greece - polygon, we said, to try radical solutions that lead to further decay of democracy, social justice and deepening social inequalities, to new forms of feudalism.

Because for some reason nobody wanted, Slobo was decided that with the help of the JNA join what he thought was his.

He got the ears and ran out of Kosovo.

The year 2006. and Montenegro became independent.

In The Guardian of 22 September this yea , we read that "the American dream turned into a nightmare."

The gap between rich and poor has widened, absent the possibility of economic and social advancement of those down.

Between the 2007 and 2010, the average American family has lost its fortune and its financial situation has returned to the level of in 1992.

Today they are family income and the level of the 1988, and poverty rates since 1973 grew.

An average man's 2010 earned as a man by 1963.

In one of the four families homeless parent is employed - but his salary is not enough for board and lodging.

If these are the consequences of liberal capitalism in the center of the Empire, some idiot man must be to believe that the same concept to give better results in our countries were reduced?

And to unite on this concept?

The final range

Yugoslav dream existed.

He suppressed, delayed, rejected ... but maybe not, however, and the dead.

The concept of unification cannot be easily depleted.

Let's save it for another time, for another, hope valuable ideas.

Until then ...

The MIP Montenegro have forgotten to send a non-paper and Tasmania.

Because chances are that Tasmania secede from Australia and joined the Montenegrin Yugoslavia still slightly higher than that found that Kosovo and Albania.

This is corroborated by the statement of Kosovo analysts Albinot Malokua, which agency Anatolian said the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Montenegro to form a G6 ''is neither healthy nor good''.

"A G6 is not liable Kosovo or Albania, and even Albanians in the Balkans in general'', said Maloku.

Call me a cynic, but it seems to me that the ultimate step B6 new union between Montenegro and Serbia.

Of course : and this new Yugoslavia would be open, as she passed - in the secular and civil country would be room for all who want to join.

Ora in Parlamento. Davanti agli italiani.

Now in Parliament. In front of Italians. In the light of the sun

Statement by the President of the Council , Enrico Letta

Berlusconi to try to justify the act crazy and irresponsible today, all aimed only to cover his personal affairs, attempts to overthrow the omelet using the excuse of VAT.

The responsibility of the VAT increase is instead just Berlusconi and his decision to resign their parliamentary Wednesdays, unprecedented, which deprives Parliament and the majority of the certainty required to take measures which are then converted.

For this reason, yesterday it was decided to go to the clarification parliamentary and had unanimously decided to postpone until after the vote in Parliament the necessary economic measures. Italians will send back to the sender so gross a lie and a similar attempt at total distortion of reality. In Parliament, everyone will assume its responsibilities for the country first.

Italy Prime Minister Enrico Letta threatens to step down

Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta says he will resign unless his cabinet gets clear backing in a parliamentary vote expected to be called next week.

His warning came after the government failed to approve key budget measures.

Mr Letta's government is an unstable coalition between his party and that of ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi could lose his Senate seat after his fraud conviction.

His backers say they would leave the cabinet in protest.

Snap election fears

"I have no intention of limping along or being the subject of continuous threats," Mr Letta said in a statement after the government meeting late on Friday.

"Either we go forward, and the interests of the country and citizens are put first, or this experience ends here."

Two government ministers said that Mr Letta was now planning to call a confidence vote in parliament next week.

The friction between Mr Letta's centre-left Democratic Party and Berlusconi's People of Freedom party (PDL), on the centre-right, is now paralysing the government, the BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome reports.

The cabinet is close to collapse just at a time when Italy desperately needs political stability if it is to begin to emerge from its long economic crisis, our correspondent adds.

If the PDL pulled out of the government, it would lead to snap elections.

Italy's president and business leaders have warned against new polls while is still mired in recession, saying they could reignite fears about the country's stability and financial position.

'Resignation signatures'

According to a 2012 anti-corruption law, Berlusconi should be ejected from the upper house after the supreme court last month upheld his fraud conviction.

But, after a party meeting on Wednesday, his MPs threatened to resign en masse if the Senate votes next week or expel their mentor.

The Italian news agency Ansa cited sources who said PDL members were already writing out their resignations and threatening to hand them in to the party whips.

The billionaire three-time prime minister has been sentenced to a year in prison, but because of his age is expected to serve house arrest or community service.

It was his first conviction to be confirmed on appeal in two decades of fighting legal cases.

Last week Berlusconi vowed to stay in politics even if he lost his place in the Senate.

Gangsters now becoming desperate

Gangsters now becoming desperate

PUTRAJAYA: Secret societies are ganging up on the police following the nationwide crackdown on hardcore criminals, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said the success of Ops Cantas Khas had made the gangs desperate, leading them to group together to fight the law.

Khalid told reporters that a number of top cops had received death threats from the underworld.

“This clearly shows Ops Cantas Khas, which began on Aug 17, is successful and effective in fighting crime,” he said after attending a crime prevention forum moderated by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi here yesterday.

“(In their desperation) criminals are threatening the police.”

Khalid said that his men were not intimidated by the threats and vowed to act against those who made them.

After more than a month, 11,873 people had been detained nationwide and 401 weapons were seized, including firearms, he said.

Earlier at the forum, Khalid expressed fear that Malaysia would turn into Mexico or Colombia should gangs group up and become dominant, and if there were no preventive detention laws in the country.

In Mexico and Columbia, he said, drug cartels and other organised crime groups were powerful because the law enforcement institution there was weak.

Khalid said that preventive detention, under proposed amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act 1953, was needed to curb organised crime.

He said gangs had become bold and blatant in committing crime after the abolition of the Internal Security Act and Emergency Ordinance in 2011.

“So, I hope the people understand that we need preventive detention laws to live in peace and harmony,” he said.

Under the proposed amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act, a person may be held for two years without charge or trial.

The detention may be extended for another two years in the interest of public order, security or crime prevention.

Golden Dawn wire tapped as Greece reels from violent protests

Golden Dawn wire tapped as Greece reels from violent protests

The Greek intelligence service have placed wire taps inside the communications of Golden Dawn - the far-Right political party suspected of having links to the murder of a Left wing rapper, it has been claimed.

In a turbulent 24 hours for Greece, anti-fascist protests became violent, an army website demanded the resignation of the government, and an official admitted they planted wire taps in the communications of a neo-Nazi political party.

The intelligence service official told the AFP news agency that the wire taps on Golden Dawn were authorised to prove alleged complicity in crimes following the murder of an anti-fascist rapper.

Pavlos Fyssas, a 34-year-old hip hop artist, was fatally stabbed in an Athens commuter town on September 17 in an apparent ambush.

The group has denied it had anything to do with the killing, but he was stabbed to death by a self-proclaimed supporter.

“The intelligence service has the authority to conduct wiretaps for reasons of national safety, provided there is judicial approval,” the source said.

“Both random and targeted wiretaps have been carried out for quite some time.”

The murder of Mr Fyssas caused outrage across Greece.

On Wednesday at least 10,000 people demonstrated in Athens in an anti-fascist protest organised by unions and political parties.

“The crisis brought us to our knees but we need to say a loud 'no’ to fascism like we did in '74,” Vangelis Georgountzos, 59, told local newspaper Ekathimerini, referring to the student uprising that led to the overthrow of Greece’s then-ruling military junta.

But the protest descended into violence when demonstrators tried to approach Golden Dawn’s central offices in Athens.

Tear gas was fired after dozens of hooded demonstrators, some wearing motorcycle helmets, broke off from the initially peaceful march that police blocked from reaching the party’s offices.

Police chased small groups of protesters through the streets.

The rise of Golden Dawn, which won 18 parliamentary seats last year, has exposed Greece to international criticism a few months before it assumes the rotating European Union presidency in January.

Golden Dawn is now Greece’s third most popular political party, but its support has dropped by a third this month after the death of Fyssas.

It is rumoured however to be considering walking out of parliament, in an attempt to force elections.

Evangelos Venizelos, the deputy prime minister, warned on Thursday that doing so would be “political suicide” for them.

In a sign of the tension within the country, a blog post appeared on a military reservists’ website on Thursday demanding the resignation of the government and president and the appointment of an interim government under the guarantee of the armed forces.

The posting, which claimed it was speaking on behalf of the special forces reservists and the Greek people, demanded “the immediate resignation of the government due to its inability to provide to the nation the constitutional rights to labour ... health, education, justice, security.”

An Athens prosecutor ordered an investigation into the statement.

A later posting on the same site criticised coverage by local broadcast media and blogs of the issue, accusing them of “trying to characterise us as coup instigators.”

The papers were reported today that DPP Whip Ker Chien-ming said that the

SID was tapping the legislature's switchboard number....

Earlier in the day Legislator Ker Chien-ming, a caucus whip of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), told the press he had received notice from the court that the wiretapping of his phones had been discontinued, following his acquittal in a breach of trust case.

The notice listed several numbers that had been under surveillance, including his cell phone number and the Legislative Yuan's switchboard number 0972630235, Ker said.

"Even the parliament was being monitored," Ker said at a press conference at the Legislative Yuan, which was also attended by DPP legislators Wu Ping-jui and Kuan Bi-ling.

.....

Meanwhile, at a separate press conference Saturday morning, acting SID spokesman Yang Jung-chung repeatedly denied Ker's accusation, which was reported in a morning newspaper.

The SID "has never eavesdropped on the switchboard of the Legislative Yuan," Yang said several times.

He said 0972630235 is the number of a cell phone used by an individual.

However, Tsai Wei-min, head of the Legislative Yuan's General Affairs Department, told the press the same day that the number has been used by the Legislative Yuan since August 2006 as part of a cost saving system.

Readers may recall that Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng had been publicly accused by the President of influence peddling by calling the Minister of Justice and having him tell the prosecutors not to appeal a not guilty verdict against him.

The DPP politicians also said that the SID had been monitoring the prosecutor in the Ker case, which the SID admitted.

They admitted that they monitored her 12 year old daughter, accidentally, since she was using her mom's phone

(SCMP)

.

They then switched to the husband's phone which Lin Hsiu-tao was using, musical phones being a common feature of busy families.

It is striking that no transcript of the alleged phone calls telling the prosecutor to lay off Ker has been produced by the SID, since it has leaked transcripts of Wang Jin-pyng's phone calls.

Indeed, the lack of such leaks suggests that no such transcripts exist.

This tends to support Wang's claims that he was just comforting Ker and hadn't done anything.

The case has produced, at least for this observer, many moments of delicious blinding hypocrisy.

FocusTaiwan ran

another piece

saying that the KMT's lawyers told the Taiwan High Court that the party would not work out a political compromise in the Wang case...

Asking the KMT to consider a settlement is tantamount to advising the party to "compromise its insistence upon resisting influence peddling in judicial cases and upon defending the core values of democracy and rule of law, which is an independent judiciary," the statement said.

Anyone remember when the judge in the Chen Shui-bian case

got switched?

Media personalities gathered this week

to protest the wiretapping mess

in Taiwan

Meanwhile, back in Washington DC the diplomatic core

got egg on its face...

Representative to the US, King Pu-tsung (金溥聰), and Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) Press Division Director Frank Wang (王億) yesterday apologized over a controversial post on the Washington Post Web site, which describes Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) as “former Legislative Speaker.”

Frank Wang said Wang Jin-pyng was the “former Legislative Speaker” in the Washington Post Web site’s readers’ comments column on Sept.

14 and concluded by saying “I’m very glad the [Chinese Nationalist Party] KMT came to resolutely discipline its heavyweight party member.”

Events like this are reminders of how the KMT continues to imagine the State is an appendage of the KMT Party, using the diplomatic corps to comment on and defend what should be an internal matter of the KMT and a domestic politic issue.

Note that if they had merely said nothing, or confined themselves to noting in a pro forma fashion how the open political conflict is an indicator of the strength of Taiwan's democracy, they would not now be having to apologize..... this affairs continues to be a needless mess entirely the creation of Ma's KMT.... and judging from the comments on Facebook, tomorrow's news will be even funnier.

Greek neo-fascist party leader and senior members arrested

Greek neo-fascist party leader and senior members arrested

Greek police arrested the leader and more than a dozen senior members from the far-Right Golden Dawn on Saturday after the killing of an anti-fascist rapper by a party supporter prompted outrage and protests across the country.

[caption id="attachment_8963" align="alignnone" width="400"]golden-dawn_2686222b (Golden Dawn leader Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, right, was among those arrested (Photo: YANNIS BEHRAKIS/REUTERS))[/caption]

The party’s leader Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris, three other MPs and around a dozen members were arrested on charges of founding a criminal organisation.

They are due to appear in court on Sunday to be charged formally.

It is the first time since the military dictatorship ended in 1974 that sitting members of parliament have been arrested.

The arrests underline the Greek government’s efforts to stifle the fiercely anti-immigrant party, which has been increasingly on the defensive since the fatal stabbing.

The rapidly growing neo-fascist group enjoyed unprecedented success in last year’s national elections, stunning political observers by winning 6.97 per cent of the vote — making it Greece’s third most popular political party.

Your Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s coalition government has so far resisted calls to ban the party, fearing it could make it even more popular at a time of growing anger at repeated rounds of austerity measures.

Instead, it has tried to undermine the party by ordering probes that could deprive it of state funding.

Golden Dawn officials condemned Saturday’s arrests as an “illegal decision”, and have already threatened to quit parliament if the crackdown on its members does not stop.

Any such move would prompt by-elections which could topple the coalition, which holds only a slim majority with 155 seats in the 300-seat parliament.

Your Prime Minister Samaras ruled out snap elections in the wake of the arrests, while Haralambos Athanassiou, the justice minister, insisted all those arrested would receive a fair trail.

Saturday’s swoop on the party came days after massive street protests in Athens against the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, an activist singer with the stage name of Killah P, who was stabbed to death in an Athens commuter town on Sept 17.

His death caused riots across the country.

Although Golden Dawn denied it had anything to do with the killing, the alleged murderer was a self-proclaimed supporter.

Popular support for the party has dropped by a third this month since the death of Fyssas.

The party has a long record of controversy.

Its black T-shirt-wearing henchmen have been involved in numerous attacks on immigrants in the capital, with elements of the security services accused of colluding with the party.

Mr Michaloliakos, who gave a Nazi salute upon being appointed to a seat on the Athens town council in 2010, is a devotee of George Papadopoulos, the former Greek dictator and spent time in prison in the late 1970s for an assault and attempted bombing attack.

Last year he denied the existence of gas chambers in Nazi concentration camps.

His wife Eleni Zaroulia, who entered parliament in June 2012, also attracted widespread criticism when she appeared wearing a ring in the shape of the Iron Cross, the military decoration of the Nazi armed forces.

Spokesman Kasidiaris, a former commando, infamously hit female Communist MP Liana Kanelli across the face during a talk show debate in June 2012.

A fellow MP threatened to remove immigrant children from hospitals to make room for Greek babies.
