GEORGE TOWN (Malaysia) (July 2, 2013): Penang Governor Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas today called on Penangites to support the state government's RM 6.3 billion transport project consisting of three bypasses and an undersea link.
In his speech when officiating the first term of the 13th state assembly, he said that the roads in Penang needed upgrading.
"The roads need to be improved to be on par with developed nations to ensure the state remains as a location of choice among investors and tourists," he said.
The project include building bypasses from Gurney drive to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu expressway, from that expressway to Ayer Itam and from Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang, as well as an undersea link joining Gurney Drive to Bagan Ajam.
Abdul Rahman hoped a detailed environmental impact assessment will be conducted to ensure the project is safe and well-executed.
The project has received mixed reviews, with some quarters saying there is a need for an alternative route in and out of the island, while other groups have cautioned the state government on the project's environmental impact.
Abdul Rahman also called on the state government to review the standard operating procedures to ensure the incident at the Second Penang Bridge ramp in Batu Maung and the collapse of the lightning arrestor from atop the Umno building in Jalan Macalister last month, do not recur.
"All parties involved should work together in investigating the incidents to keep the public safe," he said.
"My condolences to the family of the three victims in the incidents."
In closing, Abdul Rahman advised all 40 assemblymen to adhere to the rules of the state legislative assembly to ensure the proceedings run smoothly.
"Actions and behaviour of the elected representatives will attract public attention," he said, calling on them to act respectfully, be an example to the public and reflect civility and advancement of the state.
