Top deals this week
The Exquisite Collection Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc 2012 France (12%, Aldi, £4.99)
Next week I’ll share my top summer wines. These three here were all dropped from the list only reluctantly, to improve the mix of grapes, regions, styles, prices or retailers. They are all stupidly good, and good value. This one’s a great everyday number, a sauvignon blanc from Bordeaux that veers towards the nettles and grass style. It was the first bottle to be drunk – and finished – in my new flat.
Escarpment The Edge Pinot Noir 2012 Martinborough, New Zealand (12.5%, Waitrose, £10.49 down from £14.99 to July 16)
Martinborough, tucked away on the southerly tip of New Zealand’s North Island, is becoming increasingly well known for the calibre of its pinot noir. I’m a big fan of the style – lighter on its feet than one from Central Otago and a bit less soprano than the high-nosed, floaty pinots from Marlborough. This is beautifully scented – a delight.
Tournon Mathilda Shiraz 2011 Victoria, Australia (13%, Marks & Spencer, £14.99)
If you are wondering why this Victorian shiraz has that slightly feral whiff of northern Rhône that I always describe to myself as “old fence post”, then part of the answer might lie in the name of the producer. This is Michel Chapoutier’s Australian outpost, and he is making delicious wine – it has the hot, scented bite of freshly cracked black pepper and violets.
