38 injured in freeway pileup in Miaoli

Taipei, July 28 (CNA) Nearly 40 people needed hospital treatment Sunday after a pile up on National Freeway No. 1, which involved a van, four SUVs and two tour buses, police said.

The accident took place around 7:30 p.m. on the northbound carriageway in Miaoli County.

A van hit the central barrier and overturned, causing the follow-on crashes in which the tour bus was rear-ended by another bus carrying members of the same group of tourists, according to witness accounts.

Thirty-eight of the more seriously injured people were sent to three local hospitals.

A 9-year-old girl thrown from the overturning van sustained head and facial injuries while the rest had mostly bruises and slight cuts.

Most of the injured are from the group of 200 tourists on their way back to Keelung.

Two of the five tour buses they were traveling on were involved in the accident.

The incident caused a major congestion when the freeways were already clogged with traffic on a Sunday evening.

Vehicles were backed up 20 kilometers before the traffic got back to normal.

The cause of the accident was under police investigation.
