Merkel: New haircut of Greek debt 'not necessary'
ANA-MPA - German Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted that a new 'haircut' of the Greek debt will not be necessary, in an interview with Kathimerini daily newspaper published on Wednesday.
However, Merkel did not answer the query of what will happen if the International Monetary Fund (IMF) insists that the Greek debt should be reduced in order to continue to participate in Greece's support programme.
Asked whether Europe could continue to support a fiscal adjustment programme for Greece without the IMF, Merkel replied that "Greece has moved forward thanks to Your Prime Minister Antonis Samaras government, which has a strong focus on reforms" and added, "I am certain that the Greek debt will continue to be sustainable".
