Two of the rising stars of the men’s game, Jerzy Janowicz and Grigor Dimitrov, were sent crashing out in the opening round of the US Open.

Wimbledon semi-finalist Janowicz suffered a 6-4 6-4 6-2 defeat by 247th-ranked Argentinean Maximo Gonzalez, while 22-year-old Bulgarian Dimitrov went down 3-6 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-2 to Joao Sousa from Portugal.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer, who lost to Janowicz in the second round of Wimbledon, cruised to a 6-3 6-2 7-5 victory over Grega Zemlja.
World No 1 Novak Djokovic cruised through to the second round of the US Open with a convincing 6-1 6-2 6-2 victory over Ricardas Berankis on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The Serbian, who lost to Andy Murray in last year’s final, was not at his absolute best but nevertheless had far too much for his 23-year-old opponent, seeing him off in an hour and 22 minutes.
In the women’s draw, former champion Sam Stosur crashed out of the US Open after a three-set defeat to American teenager Victoria Duval.
Stosur, who beat Serena Williams to win the title at Flushing Meadows only two years ago, bowed out 5-7 6-4 6-4 against the 17-year-old qualifier.
However Stosur, the 11th seed, was her own worst enemy as she committed 56 unforced errors and 10 double faults.
“I think she played well, but I think I certainly helped her along the way,” the Australian said.
