Tennis: Murray chute en 8e, Nadal continue à Montréal

Montréal — Le N.2 mondial Andy Murray a été sèchement éliminé jeudi en 8e de finale du Masters 1000 de Montréal où Rafael Nadal s'est de son côté qualifié pour le tour suivant.

 

Pour son deuxième match depuis son triomphe historique il y a un mois à Wimbledon, Murray a été battu 6-4, 6-3 par le Letton Ernests Gulbis, 38e joueur mondial.

 

L'Ecossais a semblé impuissant face aux retours de service du Letton, qui jouera son premier quart de finale d'un tournoi ATP Masters 1000 depuis Madrid il y a trois ans.

 

Gulbis, 24 ans, met un terme à une série de 13 victoires consécutives du N.2 mondial.

 

De son côté, Rafael Nadal (N.4) est venu à bout du Polonais Jerzy Janowicz (N.15) 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 au terme d'un match âpre.

 

"J'ai eu une très bonne victoire, c'était un adversaire très difficile", a dit le Majorquin.

 

A propos de Janowicz, il a noté que si ce dernier parvient à "maintenir un jeu régulier tout au long de ses matches, il va faire partie des meilleurs mondiaux".

 

Nadal a par ailleurs ajouté sa voix à celles des autres joueurs du tournoi déplorant la qualité des balles qui, a-t-il expliqué, ont des réactions surprenantes: "C'est comme si elles n'étaient pas toutes les mêmes", a-t-il dit.

 

L'Espagnol retrouvera l'Australien Marinko Matosevic en quart de finale.

 

Matosevic a eu raison du Français Benoit Paire, 27e mondial, en trois sets: 7-6 (9/7), 6-7 (10/12), 6-3.

 

"Je n'ai pas tapé la balle, je ne me suis pas entraîné, ce n'est pas la grande forme", a commenté le tricolore, estimant toutefois qu'après avoir connu des semaines difficiles, personnellement, cet été, ses performances à Montréal sont de bon augure pour la suite de la saison.

 

Il avait notamment éliminé mercredi la tête de série N.8, Stanislas Wawrinka.

 

Dernier Français en lice, Richard Gasquet (N.7) affronte dans la soirée la tête de série N.9, le Japonais Kei Nishikori.
