Tennis: retour réussi pour Murray à Montréal

(DPA / AFP, Axel Heimken))[/caption]Montréal — Le N.2 mondial Andy Murray s'est qualifié pour les 8e de finale du tournoi Masters 1000 de Montréal en battant l'Espagnol Marcel Granollers mercredi, un mois après son sacre de Wimbledon.
L'Ecossais s'est imposé devant le 36e joueur mondial en 1 h 51 mn de jeu et deux sets 6-4, 7-6 (7/2).
Confiant lors de la première manche, Murray a ensuite été quelque peu gêné par son adversaire qui a multiplié les montées au filet.
Soulagé, le Britannique a confié avoir ressenti de la "nervosité" avant de rentrer dans le Court central montréalais où il disputait son premier match depuis son triomphe historique du 7 juillet à Wimbledon.
"J'imagine que c'est une bonne chose" d'avoir fait preuve d'appréhension, a relevé l'athlète de 26 ans.
Son "objectif" à Montréal, a-t-il expliqué, "est de jouer le plus de matches possibles" en vue de l'US Open fin août.
Mais "les conditions météorologiques jouaient des tours" mercredi, avec un vent soutenu par moment, et "je n'ai réussi qu'à la fin (de la rencontre) à bien rentrer dans le match comme je le voulais", a ajouté Murray.
Au prochain tour, il retrouvera le Letton Ernests Gulbis, 38e mondial, qui a sorti l'Italien Fabio Fognini, tête de série N.13, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Troisième joueur mondial, David Ferrer n'aura joué qu'un match à Montréal.
Bien plus agressif sur la balle, le Russe Alex Bogomolov, modeste 83e raquette mondiale, a eu raison de l'Espagnol en deux sets: 6-2, 6-4.
Autre tête de série à mordre la poussière, le Suisse Stanislas Wawrinka, 10e joueur mondial, a été éliminé par son grand ami, le Français Benoît Paire.
Paire (27e au classement ATP) a enlevé facilement le premier set (6-2), avant de batailler ferme pour arracher la deuxième manche (7-6), notamment grâce à ses volées au filet.
"J'ai eu la pire préparation possible, je n'avais pas tapé de balles depuis deux semaines (avant de venir à Montréal, NDLR)... je suis très content d'avoir gagné deux matches, j'ai hâte d'être au troisième tour", a dit Paire, indiquant avoir "mal vécu" d'être opposé à son grand ami.
Au prochain tour, il affrontera l'Australien Marinko Matosevic, issu des qualifications, qui a profité de l'abandon de l'Allemand Tommy Haas, tête de série N.10 et touché à une épaule.
La belle série des Canadiens s'est poursuivie: pour la première fois depuis 1992 le pays hôte aura deux joueurs en 8e de finales.
Tombeur la veille du géant américain John Isner, 20e mondial, Vasek Pospisil (73e mondial) a assuré sa place au troisième tour en sortant le Tchèque Radek Stepanek (6-2, 6-4).
Le meilleur Canadien actuellement, Milos Raonic (13e mondial), s'est également qualifié pour le tour suivant sans trop de difficultés.
Grâce notamment à ses montées victorieuses au filet, il a battu le Russe Mikhail Youzhny (25e mondial), 6-4, 6-4.
"Je suis content d'avoir mieux joué qu'hier (contre le Français Jérémy Chardy)", a dit Raonic, 22 ans, tout en notant qu'il avait eu "quelques difficultés" à se remettre dans le match après une brève interruption en raison de la pluie.
En revanche, son compatriote Jesse Levine n'a rien pu faire face au N.4 mondial Rafael Nadal qui l'a balayé 6-2, 6-0.
"Les conditions étaient très difficiles aujourd'hui" avec un vent soutenu, mais "j'ai livré un match solide", a commenté Nadal.
Dernier de la journé qualifié pour les 8e de finale, Juan Martin del Potro (tête de série N.6) a démarré le match en trombe (6-4 au 1er set), avant de laisser son adversaire croate Ivan Dodig reprendre le cours du jeu: Dodig remporte la 2e manche 6-4 et va jusqu'à mener 4-3 dans le 3e jeu.
Après avoir dû s'allonger un instant en début de 3e manche pour recevoir des traitements au dos, l'Argentin se ressaissit finalement et s'impose 6-4, revigoré.
Au prochain tour il affrontera le Canadien Raonic.

Tennis: Murray for successful return to Montreal
Montreal - The world No.2 Andy Murray has qualified for the 8th finals of the Montreal Masters 1000 tournament, beating the Spaniard Marcel Granollers Wednesday, a month after his coronation at Wimbledon.
The Scot has become the 36th player in the world at over 1 hour 51 minutes of play and two sets 6-4, 7-6 (7/2).
Confident in the first round, Murray was then somewhat embarrassed by his opponent who has stepped mounted net.
Relieved, the Briton told they felt the "nervous" before returning to the Montreal Centre Court, where he played his first game since his historic triumph of 7 July at Wimbledon.
"I guess that's a good thing" for showing apprehension, noted the 26 years.
Its "objective" in Montreal, he explained, "is to play as much as possible matches" for the U.S. Open in late August.
But "the weather played tricks" on Wednesday, with sustained winds at times, and "I have not succeeded at the end (of the game) to get into the game much the way I wanted," said Murray.
In the next round, he will find the Latvian Ernests Gulbis, 38th World, who released the Italian Fabio Fognini, seeded N.13, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Third largest player David Ferrer will play a game in Montreal.
Much more aggressive on the ball, Russian Alex Bogomolov, modest 83rd World racket, was due to the Spanish in two sets: 6-2, 6-4.
Other seeded to bite the dust, Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, the 10th player in the world, was eliminated by his great friend, the French Benoit Paire.
Pair (27th in the ATP rankings) easily removed the first set (6-2), before fight hard to snatch the second set (7-6), thanks to its volleys at the net.
"I had the worst possible preparation I had not typed balls for two weeks (before coming to Montreal, Ed) ... I am very happy to have won two matches, I look forward to be in the third round, "said pair, indicating that they" resented "being opposed to his great friend.
